Three Voices, One Song — Disney's Moana Remake Has Its First Musical Moment

Before Disney's live-action Moana hits Australian cinemas on July 8, the film has dropped something worth paying attention to.

"Along The Way" is out now — a brand new song written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and performed by Catherine Laga'aia (the new live-action Moana), alongside franchise veterans Dwayne Johnson, back as the demigod Maui, and Auli'i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in both animated films and now returns as an executive producer on the film. A music video and a behind-the-scenes featurette featuring Miranda and the filmmakers are both available to watch now.

It's a quietly remarkable creative moment — the new Moana and the voices that defined the character before her, singing together for the first time.

The film itself is directed by Thomas Kail (Hamilton) and tells the same story of a young Pacific Islander who voyages beyond her island's reef with the demigod Maui. The supporting cast is worth noting too — Rena Owen, John Tui and Frankie Adams round out the family at the heart of the story, with all three actors from New Zealand, bringing genuine Pacific grounding to the production.

The soundtrack rollout is generous for music fans: the Original Soundtrack drops June 27, followed by a Deluxe version on July 9 and the Original Score on July 11. Then on August 1, "Moana: Voices Across The Ocean" arrives — an inspired-by album executive produced by Dwayne Johnson, featuring 15 tracks from Pacific artists including Stan Walker, Dinah Jane, and Iam Tongi.
